What does the mind have to do with weight loss?.
It has everything to do with it, the initial idea that you want to lose weight, the selection of diet plan and menu preparation and willpower to keep to the diet on the days that you want to give up are a few examples.
The use of the mind, positive affirmations, repetition of positive statements all sounds very new age and hippie dippy but if you consider it seriously, every positive (and negative) situation begins within our minds. Many people think that they are victims of external forces that are then blamed for their “bad luck”. It is true that there are external forces that can have an impact on a person, but the strength of the impact is determined by the individual. A wise man once told me that there is no such thing as bad luck because you make your own luck. When you are in the midst of despair, this message is not received very well but that doesn’t make the statement any less true. Luck seem to be a strange word to use in connection to weight loss, but think back to the number of times that you have thought “ I am overweight because I am unlucky, unlike these lucky, naturally slim people who can eat whatever they want and don’t put on any weight”.
So, how do you make your own luck in regard to weight loss?. The starting point is to resolve to lose weight and believe that you can do it. You believe that you can achieve this goal by having absolute faith in yourself. There are several methods that you can persuade yourself that you will be successful and they all fall under what we could call self brainwashing. This is what self help author Napoleon Hill would call it. Napoleon Hill wrote many books with the aim of helping people achieve success, generally in a business context, but Hill’s principles of success are true for anything.
A Few Methods
Visualization: Take a few minutes every day to seriously contemplate yourself as a slim person, doing the things that you want to do, wearing the clothes that you want, feeling the attraction that other people feel for your slim self.
Affirmations: Play repeating spoken positive weight loss affirmations to yourself for a period of time every day. The affirmations can be of your own choosing or you can use the prepared affirmations of others. Play the affirmations at a low volume, barely audible (best with headphones). The theory is that your subconscious will pick up on the message and it will change the way that you think. The subconscious is a very powerful tool to use, it is like your background operating software and it has an effect on the way you approach life and the actions that you take.
Written Messages: The messages can be written on paper and posted in your house for you to read every day, they could be subliminal messages created by yourself or someone else that play in the background on your computer screen. You will not consciously see the messages, but like the affirmations, your subconscious will pick them up. In the early days of TV and movie advertising, messages like these were flashed across the screen to induce people to buy certain products. The were found to be so effective that their use was banned.
Meditation: The act of meditation is said to make you more mindful of you self, including the food that you eat, how much you eat and when you eat. Meditation is also thought to have other physical benefits such as regulation of blood pressure.
It is important to practice whatever method(s) you choose consistently. Every day is ideal.
If you aren’t familiar with the topic of using your mind to achieve success, the methods above may sound weird but what have you got to lose?. I find that the combination of subliminal written messages and low volume audio work well. You don’t have to use them simultaneously.
As your mental attitude to weight loss becomes more positive, it will prompt you to do more research. If you know more about the physical aspects of weight loss, you will be able to choose the right diet for you. Everyone is different and a diet that works for one person, may not work for another.
Successful weight loss is a combination of the physical and the psychological, just like most things in life. Don’t ignore the fact that your thoughts have a very large impact on the success or failure of your goals in anything. The brain uses up to 20% of the energy that a person consumes, use the energy wisely.

“Being in a positive state of mind is more important than you might think as the mind cannot be creative in a negative state. New ideas, thoughts and inspiration will only take place when the mind is positive.” Joe Hinchliffe, Average Joe’s Success Rituals
