Weight Loss And Water


We all need water to continue living, but water can also help you to lose weight. Water is an appetite suppressant and drinking water before a meal will reduce the amount of food that you want to eat. Water also hydrates the body, flushes the toxins away and reduces water retention in the body.

The generally accepted amount of water you need to drink is eight  8 ounce glasses per day. More water will be needed if you exercise, and you should always make sure that you are hydrated, whether you are on a diet or not. More than the recommended intake of water is fine. You can actually drink too much water though, the medical term for this is Hyponatremia ( low sodium in the blood) and this can occur due to the amount of water you drink over a short period of time rather than the total amount during a day. In basic terms, a large amount of water consumed in a short period of time will lower blood sodium levels and could, in the most severe cases, lead to death.


What Water To Drink

I would suggest spring water or at a minimum, purified water. Many chemicals and bugs can get into our domestic water supply and most of them don’t seem to make us ill but I don’t really want to drink chemicals and bugs if I don’t have to, do you? The store-bought water is not very expensive but normally comes in plastic bottles. Chemicals can sometimes leech into the water from the bottle, so buy your water from stores with high turnover to get the water that has been bottled recently. The best solution is to buy a water filtration system for you house or at least a filtration system that will supply drinking water. Some studies suggest that ice water is excellent for weight loss due to the fact that your body has to work to warm the water up after you drink it and this boosts your metabolism.


Replace Unhealthy Drinks

Use water to replace your unhealthy drink habits. Drink water instead of soda and other drinks with high sugar content. You may not think that water could replace these drinks, but once you are in the habit of drinking water instead of other drinks, you will not miss your sodas. I have found that ice water works very well in this regard.


Water is Needed in Order  to Burn Fat

Your body can’t metabolize stored fat or carbohydrates without water. This process of metabolizing fat is called lipolysis. Drinking enough water is essential for burning off fat from food and drink, as well as stored fat. Some studies have found that increased water intake led to increased lipolysis and fat loss in animal studies.



A properly hydrated body will perform exercise more efficiently. The water helps the organs to work properly, lubricates the joints and helps the muscles to work correctly. If you are on a weight loss diet, exercise is a wonderful booster to your program.

Drinking more water is an aid to weight loss and not a solution in itself. You must still watch what you eat and exercise.
